Flor de Muertos captures the cross-cultural collisions regarding death along the US and Mexico border, centering on a week-long period that commences with the traditional Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead and ending with the 20th All Souls Procession in Tucson, one of America's most compelling examples of festal culture. The film is written and directed by Danny Vinik, a Tucson native and a notable producer, director and founder of Brink Media, based in Tucson. Part documentary and part concert film (often simultaneously), the film features the music of Tucson-based Calexico, an acclaimed Americana/alternative band whose two principal members are Joey Burns and John Convertino, joined onstage by a legion of international collaborators in a theatrical post-Procession concert at the Historic Rialto Theatre. |
